INCORRECT IRS DEBT - WHAT’S GOING ON?
The IRS reviews tax returns randomly or because something catches it’s attention. These reviews are usually called “audits”, but often the IRS sends out a CP2000 report that’s issued because something reported to it doesn’t match the return filed.
When a return isn’t filed and the IRS sees income reported for the year in question… that may result in debt as well as the IRS will often create a return for you. This return is called an IRS “substitute” return.
It’s common that the substitute return and the proposed CP2000 report show a debt amount that’s incorrect, and many tax return audit amounts end up being incorrect as well, either because you didn’t participate in the audit, or the IRS disagreed with your proof/argument or it made a mistake.
